The Easy Way
Get me to do it for you, if you don't mind telling me your login details at your domain registration company. For your peace of mind, I suggest you change your password after I've done the nameserver update.
- If you register your domain name with Spaceship, all I need from you is your username and your password.
- If you register with another domain registrar, I will need to know who that is, plus your username and your password.
The DIY Way
- Log in to the account where you pay for your domain name and look for a section labeled "My Domains" or "Domain Management."
- Once you find your domain, look for a tab or button specifically labeled "DNS" (short for Domain Name Servers) or "Nameservers." You will likely see a setting that says "Use default nameservers"—you want to change this to "Custom" or "I'll provide my own."
- Updating the records: Delete any existing nameservers you see in the list and carefully copy and paste the new ones I sent you. Most systems require at least two, but some might have more. After you've entered them, be sure to hit "Save" or "Update."
What Happens Next
It is important to know that this change isn't instant. It takes time for the "news" of your new site to travel across the entire internet. This process is called propagation and usually takes anywhere from a few hours to a full day. During this time, you might see your new site on some devices but not on others.
A Final Tip
If you feel nervous about clicking the wrong thing, most domain companies have a 24/7 chat support team. You can simply message them and say, "I want to update my nameservers to these new ones," and they will often do it for you while you wait.
